Executive Director for growing, creative congregation in East Bay, San Francisco Bay Area

Location: San Leandro, CA 94577

Executive Director, Temple Beth Sholom | East Bay, San Francisco Bay Area
JOB DESCRIPTION

Temple Beth Sholom (TBS) is a growing, creative, and rooted Jewish community charting a new path in congregational life. We look forward to welcoming a new Executive Director who is organized, mission-driven, engagement-focused, and collaborative to help our congregation realize its full potential.

The Role
The Executive Director serves as a senior member of Temple Beth Sholom's professional leadership team. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring excellence in operations, financial stewardship, community and member engagement, and organizational sustainability. This is an intentionally hands-on executive role within a growing and evolving congregation. The Executive Director will balance strategic leadership with direct operational oversight, while helping to build systems and capacity for continued growth. The Executive Director represents TBS in all interactions with colleagues, staff, members, vendors, partners, and associates of the congregation - and the broader community. The Executive Director reports to the Board and works in close partnership with the Rabbi as co-leaders of the congregation’s professional team. This role is primarily on site at TBS.

About Temple Beth Sholom
Temple Beth Sholom is an independent Jewish community of 140 member households in the San Francisco Bay Area, committed to joyful Judaism, lifelong learning, Tikkun Olam, and climate action. We are an inclusive, multi‑generational congregation made up of families and individuals from very diverse backgrounds and identities, with a warm and informal culture.
Education is central to who we are. Our preschool and after‑school programs are a vibrant hub of community life. TBS is growing rapidly—membership has increased by more than 50% in recent years—and we continue to launch innovative programs that reflect emerging trends in American Jewish life. Like pluralistic Jewish outreach organizations, we meet people where they are and design programs that fit their needs.
Our senior staff includes a rabbi, cantor, and executive director.

About You
Our next Executive Director will work as part of our senior leadership team to drive our mission forward. We seek an Executive Director who is ready to roll up their sleeves to realize our vision together with staff and lay leaders, including through expanding major fundraising, increasing enrollment and expanding programs, and continuing to grow our membership. Our next Executive Director will understand the importance of community engagement, human-centered design, and a flexible approach to community building and programs, and is willing to be creative in how they are serving a Jewish community as it evolves. Our next Executive Director will keep close to their hearts the question “what do our present and future members need in their lives and how do we offer that in a Jewish way?”
